Baby driver is a gripping movie and breath of fresh air for action movies in a whole. This crime comedy has the right balance of laughs and action. With different plot twists but a somewhat predictable ending, I find it an intriguing movie that is a good watch for action loving audiences who also have an ear for music. As all movies, it does have a few mistakes which many movies today tend to make. Looking past them however reveals a great movie with an amazing soundtrack and great action scenes.
To briefly summarize the plot with little spoilers, Baby is a great driver with a love for music because of how it helps him cope with an accident he had when he was a child which had an impact it's had on his life. He makes remixes of conversations around him by recording them with an old cassette player then turning them into songs. Baby had a brief stint with crime, and he made the mistake of robbing from Doc (Kevin Spacey), a crime kingpin who now forces him to drive as penance. He’s almost paid his due. He has one more job for Doc till his life can go back to the way it was. Of course, that's not how any of it goes down and baby is forced to go through a few more jobs. And when Baby meets a waitress named Debora (Lily James), he immediately falls in love after hearing her sing which made him want out of the game even more.
The aspect of the movie that really separates it from any other of the genre is its rhythmic storytelling. The first scene of baby eluding the police is in unison to the music he is listening to the doors slamming to the squealing of his tires as he pulls away. However it doesn’t stop there, the music is also in unison with Baby’s everyday surroundings like texts being sent or him just walking to get the crew coffee. It’s truly amazing to have a film with great rhythm and flow from the beginning to the end. But it goes one step higher when it can do it to the music in Baby’s life.
So throughout the movie Baby meets a range of criminals from an infamous crime duo of husband and wife known as Buddy (Jon Hamm) and Darling (Eiza Gonzalez) to the menacing mentality of Bats (Jamie Coxx) who has a much different approach to handling situations that arise. However Baby doesn't have the appearance of what you'd think a seasoned getaway driver would have, raising many questions and concerns for his “passengers”. As the movie progresses however his skills are really highlighted and shown when he gets out of situations many found impossible. He is still treated as the “baby” of the group though due to his fairly non violent nature, which can easily change if the things he cares most about are in danger.
Overall “Baby Driver” does a great job in capturing the audience's attention. It utilizes it's amazing action scenes and soundtrack by combining them in what hasn’t been done before. And a movie is only as good as the actors performing it, which is no problem with a star studded cast of amazing actors that make the concept work. The movie has a great energy that gets people moving, which is why “Baby Driver” has opened the gate to a new spin on the action comedy genre. Hopefully more companies can take note and just keep improving the concept which “Baby Driver” has created.
